Company Program - A Student Venture inspires high school students to understand the role of business in our society by creating an enterprise of their own. By collaborating with professional volunteer consultants to design, organize and operate a real business, student’s experience how a small enterprise functions. These new entrepreneurs work within the structure of our Canadian economic system and realize the benefits it provides.

Company Program - A Student Venture offers new possibilities for the next generation of successful start-ups.

• Discover the risks and rewards of starting a business

• Systematically solve actual business challenges

• Demonstrate the importance of ethical standards in business

• Foster positive relationships between youth and business communities

Students from Edmonton and the surrounding area are formed into companies of 15-20 students. Each company is sponsored by a local corporation, which provides volunteer business advisors to support and guide the students. There are also programs in Drayton Valley, Westlock, Grande Prairie and Fort Saskatchewan.

During the course of their Company's operation, students will have the opportunity to:

  • incorporate and capitalize their company by selling shares
  • organize a board of directors and elect or appoint officers
  • produce and market a product or service
  • establish production and sales goals for their company
  • monitor progress toward their goals at regular company meetings
  • maintain and analyze financial records
  • compile an annual report for shareholders, pay a dividend, and liquidate the company
  •

While working as a member of their company, students will gain many valuable experiences and skills that will help them to succeed in future endeavors. Students will develop critical thinking, speaking and leadership skills, while increasing their understanding for teamwork and responsibility. These are basic workforce-readiness skills that employers desire in their employees.

Each student run company operates one night a week for 18 weeks, from the beginning of February until the beginning of June. The program hosts companies on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the JA Centre, #200 World Trade Center Edmonton, located at 9990 Jasper Avenue.
